Hot potatoes, cold spaghetti and mashed banana were on the menu at Sydney Airport’s Qantas Club lounge today, but thankfully it wasn’t a new Neil Perry concept in preflight dining.

Instead, this was Qantas teaming up with The Wiggles to launch The Joey Club – a program aimed at Australia’s youngest frequent flyers.

Frequent flyers between 3 and10 years old will receive a special Joey Club-branded ‘novelty passport’ where they can record details of their flight, which will no doubt activate the planespotter gene in many a tiny traveller.

(That said, it should be noted that in April 2014 Virgin Australia launched a similar program aimed at young flyers, complete with a passport in which they could collect special stamps each time they fly.)

“Many of our pilots, engineers and cabin crew chose careers in aviation after taking their first flight with Qantas so we want to further inspire a new generation of Qantas customers and employees” explains Qantas exec Olivia Wirth.

“We’ve always had initiatives in place for children travelling with us but the Joey Club takes it to the next level with a formal program and a number of new benefits that will make flying with Qantas more fun for kids,” Wirth added.

This will include special kids menus in domestic lounges, including made-to-order sandwiches in animal shapes, fresh fruit and snacks such as popcorn and sultanas.

Qantas says it’s also building up inflight entertainment channels for kids, including dedicated movie and TV channels for kids.

Meanwhile on the ground, Qantas is expanding the kids zones across its lounge network, which include children’s furniture, toys, books and Apple iMacs, with a new Family Zone opening this week at Qantas Los Angeles Business Lounge.

Wirth reveals that children are currently the fastest-growing segment of the Qantas Frequent Flyer membership base, with some parents signing up their children from birth.

However, they’ll still need to go some distance to top the elite Diamond status of two-week old Hilda Björnström, who ranks as the world’s youngest elite-status frequent flyer

From June 2015, all new Australian-based Frequent Flyer members between the age of three and ten years old will receive a special Joey Club kit when they join the program.

To mark the Joey Club launch, Qantas is waiving the normal Qantas Frequent Flyer joining fee of $89.50 for children who sign up  at www.qantas.com/kids until December 31, 2015.

The pink lady! Nicole Richie rocks sheer long-sleeved top and black high-waisted trousers as she dazzles the crowds at Westfield appearance

Nicole Richie was given a rock-star reception when she made her much-hyped appearance at Westfield shopping centre in Sydney’s Parramatta on Thursday night.

The diminutive beauty, who has been married to Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden since 2010, happily posed with fans who had patiently camped out to catch a glimpse of the 33-year-old designer.

Living up to her stylish reputation, the Candidly Nicole star’s outfit didn’t disappoint.

Rock-star reception! Nicole Richie beamed as she made her way through Westfield shopping centre in Parramatta, Sydney on Thursday night

We all know Nicole Richie is a bit of a fashion maven.

Long gone are the days of dodgy fake tan, straggly extensions and Juicy Couture tracksuits. Now Nicole is all sleek and chic with still a hint of the bohemian edge she became well known for when she was styled by Rachel Zoe.

And last night in Australia she lived up to her reputation as she attended an event at a Westfield shopping centre, wearing this very cool top by Balmain. We love the sheer jacquard and geometric pattern and styled with wide leg trousers, Nicole has really nailed this new season look.

The mother-of-two showed off her petite frame in a sheer, long-sleeved top, which she teamed with high-waisted, flared black trousers.

Her eye-catching pink pixie cut injected a dash of colour into the look, while she accessorised her ensemble with a simple silver necklace and an array of earrings.

Inside the event, fans were treated to an exclusive fashion workshop held by Nicole, which was focused around autumn racing in conjunction with Myer for the upcoming Golden Slipper event.

Hey, there! The mother-of-two gave an enthusiastic wave to the crowd as the took to the microphone to give a fashion masterclass in the lead up to the Golden Slipper event, which will be held in Sydney this Saturday

Miss Richie has landed the coveted role of international ambassador for this year’s Golden Slipper Carnival, which will be held in Sydney on March 21. As part of her gig she will judge Myer’s popular Fashions On The Field competition.

As Creative Director for her clothing and accessories line House of Harlow 1960, and with her experience acting as a mentor for aspiring designers on reality show Fashion Star, Nicole is well placed to cast her eye over the best dressed’s efforts.

While media were strictly forbidden from asking about her former reality show The Simple Life, her stint in rehab, her new sister-in-law Cameron Diaz and family, Nicole was eager to discuss her track-side fashion.

Speaking to News.com.au about her eye for style, Nicole said of her upcoming races appearance: ‘This is my first race day so I would suggest just to “have fun with it” as that’s the fun part about fashion. You can live in the moment.’

‘I don’t have a backup here, but I have my outfit sorted. It’s a surprise.’

She also revealed to The Daily Telegraph that she wouldn’t be placing any bets: ‘I have never won gambling in my life. I am really bad at it.’

The Richie-Madden’s clan love affair with Australia is a long-running saga after husband Joel, and the father of her two children, daughter Harlow, seven, and son Sparrow, five, began working as a judge on The Voice Australia in 2012.

During The Voice filming duties the young family are based in both Sydney and LA.

The longtime edition to the singing show will be joined this season by his twin brother, Benji, in the same spinning chair.

Urban Vineyard: A Taste of Queenstown NZ

#QUEENSTOWNLIVE

Although I’ve visited most of New Zealand’s wine regions, Central Otago has always eluded me – which is a pity, because this region near Queenstown on the South Island produces some of the world’s finest Pinot Noir and is a great food and wine destination. We got a taste of what it has to offer at Urban Vineyard, held in Sydney at the Cell Block Theatre.

This historic building, formerly the Old Darlinghurst Gaol, has 10 metre high walls of golden sandstone, still with the original bars where the cells were. It almost looks like a cathedral inside and was a cool backdrop for the event, which had six wineries showing their wines, matched with canapés prepared by New Zealand chef Josh Emett.

Urban Vineyard was one of a series of trade and consumer events presented in Sydney by Destination Queenstown, and images of Queenstown’s alpine and lake scenery were projected onto a large wall at one end of the Cell Block Theatre to whet our appetite. A music ensemble playing in the courtyard added to the atmosphere.

Emett’s restaurant, Rata, in Central Otago has a strong regional flavour and draws on his wealth of international experience, including more than a decade of working alongside Gordon Ramsay in London, New York and Melbourne. Among the canapés we tried were some large, meaty oysters from New Zealand’s Stewart Island, clams with seaweed butter, and little balls of crumbed ox tongue topped with thin discs of radish.

Each stall had cheeses for tasting, and we really loved the dainty goat’s cheese profiteroles with honey and rosemary (pictured at right).

Queenstown is the gateway to the Central Otago wine region, with hot dry summers, cool autumns and crisp cold winters providing perfect growing conditions for wines of elegance and longevity. Local wineries Amisfield, Mt Edward, Peregrine, Valli, Gibbston Valley and Two Paddocks each showed two wines from their portfolios, and we happily worked our way through them all.

Wineries of Central Otago

Two Paddocks: “Producers and purveyors of Pinot Noir to both gentry and ratbags since 1993,” says the blurb from owner Sam Neill. An actor of some repute, Neill was raised in, and still calls, the South island of New Zealand, home. He has four small vineyards in Central Otago that are farmed holistically, although they aren’t certified organic. We tasted the 2011 Picnic Riesling from Two Paddocks’ entry range, bright and expressive with floral and citrus notes, and Two Paddocks 2012 Pinot Noir, elegant and aromatic with a hint of spice. The labels feature Sam Neill’s grandfather, Sydney Neill, who, as it happens, was a wine merchant.

Valli Vineyards: We had the privilege of meeting Valli’s owner, Grant Taylor (pictured at right below), whose name is synonymous with Otago Pinot Noir. He has been making wine in the region since 1993, when there were only 20 hectares planted – today the region has more than 1700 hectares of plantings. Grant (pictured) has won the best pinot trophy at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London an unprecedented three times. His Pinot gets ever so gentle handling with a traditional basket press.

Amisfield: We met Craig Erasmus (pictured at left below), CEO of Amisfield, one of the largest single vineyard estates in Central Otago. The wine receives little intervention; all the Pinot Noir and some of the whites are naturally fermented (rather than yeast being added). I’ve heard a lot about Amisfield’s cellar door and its spectacular views. Definitely adding this one to the must-visit list!

Mount Edward: Gibbston Valley founder Alan Brady started Mount Edward as a small personal project in 1997, and it has since evolved from its humble beginnings as a Pinot Noir and Riesling producer to producing wines across a number of varieties and styles. All the vineyards and the winery are certified organic.

Peregrine: Not only does this certified organic winemaker produce superb Pinot and other cool-climate varieties, its cellar door is a huge talking point too. A giant wing-span soars above the winery and cellar door, its design winning international architectural accolades.

Gibbston Valley: One of the region’s founding wineries, its Home Block vineyard is certified organic and the wines, which include single vineyard varietals of Pinot Noir, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, are made with traditional methods, including handpicking and even stomping on the grapes. That’s dedication for you.

Cosentino begins 2015 with expansion into Queensland

The Cosentino Group has started 2015 with another significant milestone, expanding into Queensland as the business continues to grow its relationships and operations across the country.

Cosentino’s Brisbane showroom and distribution centre will showcase and distribute the company’s stone surfaces for its growing Queensland customer base. Cosentino’s new facilities, located in the Brisbane suburb of Yatala, will serve as the local Silestone, Dekton and Eco selection Hub and warehouse.

Gary Isherwood, Area Director for Cosentino Australia, comments: “We are extremely excited to be opening our new warehouse facility in Brisbane and look forward to engaging with our local customers more closely. Australia’s Sunshine State is becoming a hotspot for architecture and design, and we look forward to introducing partners and consumers in Queensland to everything Cosentino has to offer.”

Cosentino+Brisbane+Showroom+2-(1)
Gary Isherwood, Area Director for Cosentino Australia, Gines Navarro, head of exports, and Queensland General Manager Jason Henschel open the new showroom.

The new Queensland facility will be headed up by General Manager Jason Henschel who brings more than twenty years experience in the architecture and design industry.

Jason says “It’s fantastic to be able to add Cosentino to the growing design industry here in Brisbane. We’ve already had a great response from our Queensland customers so we’re looking forward to working closely with architects, designers and builders in Brisbane to create some fantastic projects.”

Since launching in Australia in 2011, Cosentino has expanded significantly, with increased operations in Sydney and a new showroom and warehouse facility in Melbourne.

To celebrate Cosentino’s entry into the Sunshine State, the company has announced new additions to its Dekton and Silestone ranges are now available for the Australian market. The new Dekton Natural Collection joins the ultracompact surface’s existing product range, with five new colours highlighting the beauty and purity of natural stone, while the new Nebula Alpha collection expands Cosentino’s signature Silestone® range.

The five new Dekton colours, Aura, Edora, Irok, Kairos and Vegha, join Dekton® by Cosentino’s initial palette which features 15 colours, divided into three different collections: Solid Collection, Tech Collection and Natural Collection.

Cosentino+Brisbane+Showroom+3
Within this new collection, Aura stands out in particular as it embodies a new design concept with a single slab design to create a limitless symmetrical pattern. Thanks to eight unique designs, compositions can be created where the veining continues from one slab to the next, giving a true mirror effect called book matching.

The Dekton® by Cosentino ultra-compact surface is a new and innovative category of surfaces created with the aim of making Cosentino a global leader in the world of architecture and design for both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Cosentino’s signature product, Silestone® also sees the addition of Nebula Alpha, a new collection consisting of four colours, representing an expansion of the well-known Silestone® Nebula series.

The new Nebula Alpha collection features four new tones; Calypso, Orion White, Phoenix and Ariel. Subtlety, subduedness and harmony are three words that define Nebula Alpha to perfection, with random and irregular veining combined with colours full of depth, luminosity, warmth and elegance.

Nebula Alpha is the perfect material for interior designers and architects when creating highly aesthetic and functional spaces or design projects. Nebula Alpha also offers every project and every customer their own unique result due to the unpredictable movement of the veins in the material

Part of the Silestone® by Cosentino product range, Nebula Alpha also offers outstanding mechanical properties including hardness, resistance to impact and scratching, low absorption and unique bacteriostatic properties, making it extremely hygienic.

Cosentino’s Brisbane operations are located at 8 Gassman Drive, Yatala.
